Nicknamed 'Prez' by singer *Billie Holiday*, Lester Young was a revolutionary tenor saxophonist whose light, airy tone and relaxed, melodic improvisations offered a profound alternative to the robust style of *Coleman Hawkins*. Gaining prominence with the *Count Basie Orchestra* in the 1930s, Young's linear, 'cool' approach became a primary inspiration for future jazz movements. His landmark small group recordings for labels like #Keynote#, #Savoy#, and #Verve#—including sessions with *Nat King Cole* and *Teddy Wilson*—are cornerstones of the swing era.
