Biography
American jazz pianist and bandleader from Red Bank, New Jersey. Count Basie formed his orchestra in 1935 and led it for nearly five decades, defining the Kansas City swing style with a famously light, propulsive rhythm section. Signature records such as 'One O'Clock Jump' and 'April in Paris', and collaborations with *Frank Sinatra* and *Ella Fitzgerald*, made his band a byword for swing.
