Novalis was a Hamburg progressive rock band active from 1971 to 1985, named after the Romantic poet. Keyboardist Lutz Rahn, bassist Heino Schünzel and drummer Hartwig Biereichel led the group from the English-language 'Banished Bridge' to German-language symphonic rock on 'Sommerabend' and 'Brandung', ranking them among the most lyrical bands of the krautrock era. Guitarist Detlef Job joined in 1975.
