Biography
Pepper Adams was the preeminent baritone saxophonist of the hard bop era, nicknamed 'The Knife' for his aggressive, cutting tone and virtuosic command. His powerful, gritty style provided a stark contrast to the cooler approach of his contemporary *Gerry Mulligan*. Adams rose to prominence in the fertile Detroit jazz scene before moving to New York. He is widely celebrated for co-leading a prolific quintet with trumpeter *Donald Byrd*, which produced landmark albums for #Blue Note# and #Riverside#, including the classic '10 to 4 at the 5 Spot'. A cornerstone of big bands, he was a founding member and key soloist in the *Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra* for over a decade, cementing his legacy as a dominant and influential voice on his instrument.
