Biography
Rhys Chatham is an American composer and guitarist born in New York City on September 19, 1952. A pupil of *Morton Subotnick* and *La Monte Young* and the first music director of The Kitchen, he redirected minimalist drone toward rock after encountering punk, creating 'Guitar Trio' and 'Drastic Classicism' for massed electric guitars. His guitar orchestra works, culminating in 'An Angel Moves Too Fast to See' and 'A Crimson Grail', made him a pioneer of the downtown New York scene. Based in Paris since 1987, he remains active as composer and performer.
