Biography
Stars of the Lid was an American ambient music duo formed in Austin, Texas, by Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride. Active since 1993, the project defined a distinct form of drone, merging heavily processed guitars with orchestral instrumentation like strings, piano, and horns to construct beatless, classical-leaning soundscapes. Their compositions evolved from early tape collage and sample-based work to expansive, minimalist epics that explored sonic texture and emotional resonance. Following McBride's death in 2023, the duo's work remains a significant influence on modern ambient and post-rock, recognized for its patient and immersive approach to composition.
