New York proto-punk band formed in 1973 by songwriter Andy Shernoff, lead guitarist Ross the Boss and rhythm guitarist Scott Kempner, and fronted in time by Handsome Dick Manitoba. 'The Dictators Go Girl Crazy!' preceded the *Ramones* debut by a year, mixing hard rock, surf covers and teenage satire, and 'Manifest Destiny' and 'Bloodbrothers' secured their reputation as punk's connective tissue between garage rock and the CBGB era.
