Recruiting Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois to overhaul their production, U2 completely transformed their driving post-punk sound into a vast, shimmering exploration of atmospheric alternative rock. The Edge's delayed guitar textures become incredibly lush and ethereal, providing a cinematic backdrop for Bono's passionate, politically abstract lyricism. It is a highly melodic, sweeping transitional record that established their ambition for stadium-sized grandeur.
