Biography

Booker Ervin was a tenor saxophonist with a huge, raw, and powerful sound rooted in the Texas blues tradition. He channeled the harmonic freedom of post-bop and modal jazz through a gutbucket, gospel-drenched cry, creating a style that was both modern and deeply traditional. Ervin is famously remembered for his explosive and influential tenure with bassist *Charles Mingus* from 1958 to 1964, contributing to landmark albums like 'Mingus Ah Um' and 'Blues & Roots'. As a leader, he recorded a celebrated series of albums for #Prestige Records#, including 'The Freedom Book' and 'The Blues Book', which showcased his formidable technique and impassioned improvisational voice before his untimely death from kidney disease.
