Biography
London funk group formed in 1971 by Steve Scipio and Patrick Patterson with musicians from the city's Afro-Caribbean community. Cymande's unhurried blend of funk, soul, reggae, jazz and calypso, heard on 'Cymande', 'Second Time Round' and 'Promised Heights' for #Janus Records#, found an audience in the United States but not in Britain, and the group split in 1974. Sampling by hip-hop artists revived their reputation, leading to a reunion, the documentary Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande, and new albums 'A Simple Act of Faith' and 'Renascence'.
