Biography
The David Murray Octet is the eight piece ensemble led by tenor saxophonist David Murray, first assembled in New York in 1980. Murray used the octet as a composer's workshop, writing for several horns over a rhythm section, and its personnel changed from album to album. The early records 'Ming', 'Home' and 'Murray's Steps' appeared on #Black Saint#, and later octet albums include 'New Life', 'Hope Scope' and the 2000 tribute 'Octet Plays Trane'. Bassist Wilber Morris and trombonist Craig Harris were its longest serving members after Murray himself.
