Biography

Gilberto Gil is a Brazilian singer, guitarist, and songwriter celebrated for his pivotal role in the Tropic谩lia movement of the 1960s. Alongside his contemporary *Caetano Veloso*, Gil fused Brazilian genres like samba and bossa nova with international rock and folk, creating a revolutionary sound that challenged the country's military dictatorship. His innovative work, including the seminal 1968 collaborative album 'Tropic谩lia: ou Panis et Circencis', led to his arrest and exile. After returning to Brazil, he continued a prolific career, exploring African music, reggae, and funk on albums like 'Refazenda' and 'Refavela' for labels such as #Philips# and #Warner Bros. Records#. From 2003 to 2008, he served as Brazil's Minister of Culture.
