Jymie Merritt

Jymie Merritt was a pioneering American jazz bassist, composer, and bandleader celebrated for his foundational role in the hard bop movement. He is best known for his influential tenure with *Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers* from 1957 to 1962, anchoring classic albums like 'Moanin''. An early adopter of the electric bass, he began with R&B acts like *Bull Moose Jackson* and *B.B. King* before joining Blakey. After his time with the Messengers, he worked with jazz giants such as *Max Roach*, *Lee Morgan*, and *Dizzy Gillespie*. Merritt also led his own innovative Philadelphia-based ensemble, The Forerunners, for several decades, exploring complex harmonic and rhythmic concepts.
