Biography
American jazz bassist from Shenandoah, Iowa, whose warm, unmistakable sound underpinned the *Ornette Coleman* Quartet on 'The Shape of Jazz to Come' (1959). Charlie Haden co-founded the Liberation Music Orchestra with *Carla Bley* in 1969, played with *Keith Jarrett* and in *Old and New Dreams*, and led the lyrical Quartet West from 1986. His playing joined folk simplicity to avant-garde freedom like no other bassist of his time.
