Lester Bowie was a leading figure in the jazz avant-garde, known for his theatrical stage presence and a highly personal trumpet style that embraced the entire history of Black music. A co-founder of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, he could play with a raw, vocal-like quality, incorporating smears, growls, and half-valve effects to create a sound that was both humorous and profound. He was a master of musical deconstruction and celebration, famously forming Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy to apply his unique aesthetic to pop songs by artists like *Whitney Houston* and *Michael Jackson*. His solo work on labels like #ECM# and #DIW#, including the album 'The Great Pretender', further cemented his legacy.
