Biography
Three 6 Mafia is an American hip-hop group from Memphis, Tennessee, formed in 1991 as the Backyard Posse, soon renamed *Triple Six Mafia*, by DJ Paul, Juicy J and Lord Infamous. Rappers Koopsta Knicca, Gangsta Boo and Crunchy Black joined before the debut album 'Mystic Stylez' in 1995, released on #Prophet Entertainment# and now regarded as a horrorcore landmark. The group founded its own label, #Hypnotize Minds#, and reached platinum sales with 'When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1' in 2000 and 'Most Known Unknown' in 2005, the latter driven by the single 'Stay Fly'. In March 2006 the group won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for 'It's Hard out Here for a Pimp' from the film Hustle and Flow. After the eighth studio album, 'Last 2 Walk', in 2008, the group fell quiet, and five members regrouped as *Da Mafia 6ix* in 2013. DJ Paul, Juicy J and Crunchy Black resumed touring as Three 6 Mafia in 2019. Lord Infamous died in 2013, Koopsta Knicca in 2015 and Gangsta Boo in 2023.
