His legendary quintets pioneered unusual instrumentation, notably incorporating cello and flute, creating a delicate and sophisticated style. He was also a renowned talent scout, with his groups serving as a launchpad for major artists like *Eric Dolphy*, *Charles Lloyd*, and *Jim Hall*.
