Mahavishnu Orchestra

Formed in New York City, the Mahavishnu Orchestra was a pioneering jazz fusion group led by guitarist John McLaughlin. [5] The original lineup defined a new musical vocabulary, merging the improvisational tenets of jazz with the volume and intensity of psychedelic rock, complex rhythms rooted in Indian classical music, and elements of funk. [1, 5] Characterized by technically virtuosic interplay between electric guitar, violin, and synthesizers over a formidable rhythm section, the ensemble's high-energy compositions and dynamic live performances pushed the boundaries of instrumental music. [3, 4] The group’s initial work set a standard for the fusion genre, shaping a generation of musicians and influencing the trajectory of progressive rock. [7, 9]
