Biography
Merzbow is the highly prolific and influential Japanese noise project of *Masami Akita*, formed in Tokyo in 1979. Taking its name from a work by Dada artist *Kurt Schwitters*, Merzbow is recognized as a foundational act of Japanese noise music. Akita's sound is a relentless and complex exploration of extreme frequencies, utilizing a vast array of electronics, homemade instruments, and feedback. Initially a duo, the project has primarily been Akita's solo endeavor, releasing hundreds of recordings on labels like #Relapse#, #Extreme#, and his own #ZSF Produkt#. Albums such as 'Pulse Demon' and the 50-CD 'Merzbox' are landmarks in the genre, showcasing a sonic evolution from industrial tape loops to intense digital and laptop-based compositions.
