Biography
Formed in Boston in 1986, Pixies became a foundational act in the American alternative rock movement. The band's music is defined by an unprecedented loud-quiet-loud dynamic structure, merging the aggression of punk with surreal lyrical themes and the melodicism of surf rock. Black Francis's distinct vocals, shifting from melodic to unhinged, combined with Joey Santiago's abrasive guitar work and a taut rhythm section, created a sound that was both abrasive and infectious. Their innovative approach to songcraft and raw production profoundly shaped the alternative and grunge genres of the 1990s, establishing a blueprint for a generation of bands.
