Sigur Rós

Biography

Formed in Reykjavík in 1994, Sigur Rós defined a unique space in post-rock with their atmospheric and elemental soundscapes. The group’s musical architecture is built upon *Jónsi* Birgisson’s spectral falsetto vocals and his signature use of a bowed guitar, which merges with classical, minimalist, and ambient aesthetics. Their compositions often feature slow-building, dynamic crescendos and a proprietary, non-linguistic vocalization called Vonlenska ('Hopelandic'), adding to their ethereal quality. By expanding rock's textural possibilities and emphasizing emotional resonance over traditional structure, the band shaped a highly influential and singular sonic language that transcends its Icelandic origins.
