Thundercat

Stephen Lee Bruner operates as Thundercat, a bassist, singer, and songwriter who expanded the technical and stylistic role of the bass guitar in contemporary music. [1, 2] Emerging from early work with thrash band Suicidal Tendencies and sessions with Erykah Badu, he developed a singular sound merging fluid, complex jazz harmony with psychedelic funk and soul. [1, 5, 6] His close collaboration with producer Flying Lotus was pivotal, shaping his solo albums and his significant contributions to Kendrick Lamar's landmark record *To Pimp a Butterfly*. [1, 8] Bruner's virtuosic six-string bass work and distinctive falsetto have defined a new, hybrid space between jazz fusion and modern R&B. [2, 5]
