Doug Watkins

A foundational hard bop bassist, Doug Watkins was a founding member of The Jazz Messengers and the house bassist for Prestige Records during a key period. Known for his big, warm tone and impeccable sense of swing, he played on hundreds of sessions with giants like Sonny Rollins, Gene Ammons, and Jackie McLean. His reliable and deeply swinging bass lines were a cornerstone of the 1950s hard bop sound before his life was tragically cut short in a car accident at age 27.
