Biography

Argentine tenor saxophonist Leandro "Gato" Barbieri was a pivotal figure who initially gained notice within the 1960s free jazz movement. [1, 2] He cultivated a distinctively raw, emotionally charged tone influenced by players like John Coltrane but soon pivoted, merging avant-garde sensibilities with the melodic and rhythmic traditions of South America. [1, 12] This fusion yielded his signature sound and brought him global recognition for his Grammy-winning 1972 score for the film *Last Tango in Paris*.
