Biography

José Afonso was a Portuguese singer-songwriter whose folk-based protest songs made him the musical conscience of the opposition to the Salazar dictatorship. His song 'Grândola, Vila Morena' was the radio signal that launched Portugal's Carnation Revolution in 1974, and albums such as 'Cantigas do Maio' (1971) made him a folk hero across the Portuguese-speaking world. He died in 1987, refusing all official honours.
