A primary innovator of free jazz, Albert Ayler was a saxophonist whose playing was ecstatic, spiritual, and deeply polarizing. He used simple, folk-like melodies as a launching point for radical improvisations that prioritized raw sound, multiphonics, and pure energy over conventional harmony. His landmark 1964 album 'Spiritual Unity', released on #ESP-Disk#, featured his trio with bassist *Gary Peacock* and drummer *Sunny Murray*, defining the 'energy music' movement.
