A pianist and composer who dedicated his career to exploring the deep African roots of jazz, Randy Weston was a towering figure in both stature and musicality. His piano style was uniquely percussive and majestic, drawing profound inspiration from his primary hero, *Thelonious Monk*. Weston's compositions, like 'Hi-Fly' and 'Little Niles', have become standards. His large-ensemble work, often brilliantly arranged by his longtime collaborator *Melba Liston*, created a powerful synthesis of post-bop and traditional African music. He spent years living in Morocco, further deepening the Afro-jazz canon with albums like 'The Spirits of Our Ancestors' and establishing himself as a vital cultural bridge.
