Biography
Larry Young was a revolutionary organist who transformed the role of the Hammond B-3 in jazz. Initially rooted in soul-jazz, he pioneered a modal, harmonically sophisticated approach inspired by saxophonist *John Coltrane*, earning him the nickname 'the Coltrane of the organ'. After early albums on #Prestige#, he signed to #Blue Note# Records, where he recorded his landmark album 'Unity'. This record, featuring artists like *Woody Shaw* and *Joe Henderson*, established him as a primary voice in post-bop. In the late 1960s and 1970s, he became a key architect of jazz fusion, contributing his distinctive, swirling sound to the groundbreaking group *The Tony Williams Lifetime* and *Miles Davis*'s seminal album 'Bitches Brew'.
