Pavement

Pavement

An American indie rock band formed in Stockton, California, Pavement originated in 1989 as the studio project of Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg. The group defined a significant strain of the 1990s underground by merging a lo-fi production aesthetic with fractured song structures, dissonant feedback, and intricate, cryptic lyricism. [1, 2, 8] Initially avoiding live performance, the band evolved from its experimental, post-punk influenced origins into a more melodically focused, though still unconventional, unit across five full-length albums. [1, 12] Pavement’s detached sensibility and commitment to independent labels established them as a foundational influence on subsequent generations of indie rock musicians. [1, 2, 13]
