Biography
English multi-instrumentalist and composer from Reading whose 'Tubular Bells' (1973) was the first release on #Virgin Records# and became a landmark of progressive rock. Oldfield followed it with 'Hergest Ridge', 'Ommadawn' and 'Incantations', building orchestral-scale works largely by overdubbing himself, then moved into songwriting with the 1983 hit 'Moonlight Shadow', sung by *Maggie Reilly*. Sequels, orchestral projects and records such as 'Amarok' (1990) and 'Return to Ommadawn' (2017) have sustained a career defined by meticulous, layered instrumental craft.
