Biography

Formed in Forest Hills, Queens, in 1974, the Ramones pioneered the American punk rock movement. The group distilled rock and roll to its essential components: rapid tempos, simple three-chord structures, and minimal instrumentation, creating a sound that directly countered the elaborate progressive and arena rock of the era. This deliberately raw and high-energy approach, defined by short, aggressive songs under a detached aesthetic, established a new musical vocabulary.
