Biography

Nehemiah Curtis "Skip" James was a seminal American Delta blues artist renowned for his haunting, high-pitched vocals and complex, three-finger picking style. His distinctive guitar work, often in an open D-minor tuning, created an eerie and profound sound that set him apart. James first recorded a series of influential but commercially unsuccessful sides for #Paramount Records# in 1931, including 'Devil Got My Woman' and 'Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues'. After decades of obscurity, he was rediscovered in 1964 during the folk and blues revival, performing at the Newport Folk Festival and recording new albums for labels like #Vanguard# and #Melodeon#, cementing his legacy as a uniquely expressive and influential bluesman.
