Biography
Stan Kenton (1911–1979) was an American bandleader and pianist whose orchestras pursued a self-consciously progressive jazz, from 'Artistry in Rhythm' through the Innovations in Modern Music and Neophonic orchestras. A major educator and incubator of talent whose clinics helped create the American school stage-band movement, he spent four decades expanding the big band's ambitions in scale, volume and harmony. His orchestra was among the most recognisable sounds in American jazz.
