Biography
Nicknamed 'The Sound' for his sublimely beautiful and lyrical tone, Stan Getz was one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists. He rose to prominence in the late 1940s as a star soloist with *Woody Herman*'s orchestra and became a defining voice of the 'cool school'. In the early 1960s, he became the primary force in popularizing bossa nova, achieving massive global success with his #Verve# recordings 'Jazz Samba' and 'Getz/Gilberto'. The latter album, a collaboration with *João Gilberto* and *Antônio Carlos Jobim*, included the iconic hit "The Girl from Ipanema" and remains one of the best-selling jazz albums ever.
