Astrud Gilberto was a Brazilian samba and bossa nova singer who became an international icon with her signature, understated vocal performance on the 1964 hit song, "The Girl from Ipanema". Her professional career was launched unexpectedly when she, then an amateur, was asked to sing English lyrics for the album 'Getz/Gilberto', a collaboration between her then-husband *Jo茫o Gilberto* and American saxophonist *Stan Getz*. The song's massive success propelled her to global fame and established her as the quintessential voice of bossa nova. She recorded numerous albums for the #Verve# label, interpreting both American jazz standards and Brazilian classics, forever cementing her legacy with her distinctively gentle, vibrato-free delivery.
