Biography
A seminal figure in the cool jazz movement, alto saxophonist Lee Konitz was a primary exponent of the 'Tristano School,' developing a cerebral and influential alternative to the dominant style of *Charlie Parker*. Known for his pure, vibrato-less tone and long, weaving melodic lines, Konitz's career was marked by relentless innovation. He was a key participant in the historic 'Birth of the Cool' sessions with *Miles Davis* and recorded his influential debut as a leader, 'Subconscious-Lee', for #Prestige#. His 1961 trio album 'Motion', recorded for #Verve# with *Elvin Jones* and *Sonny Dallas*, is considered a landmark of spontaneous, interactive improvisation and a high point in his extensive discography.
