The Caretaker

The Caretaker was the long-running project of English electronic musician James Leyland Kirby. Initially inspired by the haunted ballroom scene in 'The Shining', the project used manipulated 1930s and '40s ballroom recordings to explore memory, nostalgia, and melancholia. Early works like 'Selected Memories from the Haunted Ballroom' established a ghostly, sample-based sound. The project gained widespread acclaim for its later focus on dementia, particularly with 2011's 'An Empty Bliss Beyond This World' and the monumental six-part series 'Everywhere at the End of Time', released between 2016 and 2019. Kirby officially concluded The Caretaker alias upon the final release, leaving behind a profound artistic statement on cognitive decline.
