Biography

Yusef Lateef was a Grammy Award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist who became a major force in music for over six decades. A virtuoso on tenor saxophone and flute, he was a pioneering figure in the integration of non-Western instrumentation and tonalities into jazz, exploring so-called 'world music' long before the term was common. His landmark albums for labels like #Savoy# and #Impulse!#, including the seminal 'Eastern Sounds', blended hard bop with instruments like the oboe, bassoon, and various Asian and Middle Eastern flutes. He was a key member of *Cannonball Adderley's* sextet in the early 1960s and later won a Grammy for his new-age album 'Yusef Lateef's Little Symphony'.
